I just spent time helping my Sarah with her Pippin audition, for Diane Paulus’ wonderful new Broadway production. I worked with Diane in Johnny Baseball up at A.R.T., and found her fascinating. She is a director with the rare combination of having the whole artsy-fartsy thing, yet down to earth enough to know when a scene needs to be “faster, funnier, louder.”
My kind of director.
Anyway, Sarah and I finessed her initial read using The Primary Rules of Dialogue (found in Part I of my book). It’s amazing how strong choices can be doubly powerful and/or hilarious when adhering to just a few easy rules. Craft never ceases to astonish!
Break a leg, baby!
